Chapter Nine

Joanna opened the door after what seemed like forever. It was clear she'd just gotten out of the shower and changed clothes. Her hair was freshly dried and not yet styled. It looked cute on her.

For a moment, her face showed shock then confusion. She glanced at Brooke, then me. "Is everything ok?"

"Can I ask a big favor?" I smiled up at her and pled with my eyes. "You can say no, but I hope you don't."

Jo's gaze drifted from my laced up boots, my leather jacket, to the floppy knit cap perched atop my head, then up to the mistletoe. I could tell she approved of my look and that she'd noticed where I stood. I was also quite aware of Brooke's scowl. What did it mean?

The sleeves of Jo's old grey sweatshirt were pushed up to the elbows. I recognized it as her lay around the house shirt. She used to wear it when she was in deep cleaning mode, painting, working on the car or taking care of the lawn. Her jeans hang low on her hips and she wore a pair of brown work boots. She looked pretty damned good in her comfortable clothes. Jo was just one of those people who could dress up or down and always look scrumptious.

"What's up, Carly?" she hadn't invited us in and even though the sun was shining, it was pretty chilly. She undoubtedly was still mad or hurt.

I shivered a little but chose to ignore it. "Brooke needs a ride back to the shop. I figured if you were headed to work today you might not mind taking her?"

Jo's left eyebrow twitched as she looked at us. "Since I'm going, huh?"

Brooke gave her a winning smile. "Pretty please?"

"Fine." She turned away from the door and went back inside. "Let me grab my keys."

Damn it, don't tell me Brooke had managed to flirt herself into a ride with my best friend. I didn't know how I felt about that. The butterflies in my stomach had something to say but I wasn't willing to listen. Sure I didn't want to take her myself but Jo didn't have to jump on the chance without an argument or something.

We walked toward Jo's truck and Brooke smiled past me. She thrust her hand in Jo's direction. "Hi, I'm Brooke Ashford. I thought I should introduce myself since you're being so kind."

The look on Brooke's face was so sweet and oh so fake. I didn't understand why she was being so contrite.

Jo took her hand and shook it. I tried not to notice the slight finger squeeze she gave Brooke. "I'm Jo."

"Thanks for the ride," Brooke gushed. She fluttered her long lashes and offered Jo another amazing smile.

"Well, I guess you can manage the rest on your own. See you later." There, I put my foot down and would leave them to it. I turned to go back across the street but Brooke grabbed the sleeve of my coat.

In a low enough voice that I didn't think Jo could overhear, she said, "Please come with me.
